2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mixon won't trick anyone into thinking he's one of the best running backs, but his appeal to an NFL offense is obvious enough: he's adequate or better at all tasks, making it easy for an offensive coordinator to leave him on the field no matter the situation. Mixon's first season in Houston went well overall, and it might have been his best NFL campaign if not for injury. Two separate ankle issues cost Mixon reps – one in Week 2 (three games missed) and one in Week 15, the latter of which Mixon played through. Before that second injury, he'd topped 100 rushing yards in seven of 10 games, scoring 12 TDs and putting up high-end RB1 numbers for fantasy. Over the final four weeks of the regular season, he had 129 rushing yards total and nary a TD. Even though the Texans offense has questions to answer after scrapping much of its offensive line and firing coordinator Bobby Slowik, the key detail is that head coach DeMeco Ryans wants to run the ball regardless of who's calling plays. Mixon should be tasked with large workloads again in his age-29 season, so long as he's able to handle them without breaking down. Read Past Outlooks

Missing OTAs with minor injury
Mixon (lower body) is not participating in voluntary team activities Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has sported a walking boot recently due to an injury Wilson's sources describe as minor, though head coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to comment on the starting running back's status. All expectations remain that Mixon will be a full-go for the start of training camp in late July, if not mandatory minicamp in June. Mixon's inaugural season with Houston saw him dominate backfield reps, compiling 245 carries for 1,016 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight scores across 14 regular-season appearances while adding 36 grabs for 309 yards (on 52 targets) and another score. While Mixon faded in terms of efficiency down the stretch of the regular season, he managed a surge during the Texans' two playoff contests, combining for 43 carries for 194 yards and two scores. Mixon remains secure in a workhorse role entering his age-29 season, with Dameon Pierce and Woody Marks set to compete for No. 2 reps.

When word broke that the Bengals were done with Mixon it seemed his days of fantasy relevance might have been done too, but then the Texans swooped in to make him the starting running back for one of the best offenses in the conference. Mixon's high-usage role made him a valuable fantasy asset with the Bengals, and he might now have a similarly cushy gig as a potential three-down player in C.J. Stroud's offense. Although he averaged 4.1 YPC or less each of the past five seasons, Mixon scored 49 TDs in 69 games and averaged 3.0 receptions per contest. His career 81.6 percent catch rate and average of 6.2 yards per target represent excellent pass-catching efficiency by RB standards and make him a strong bet to see most of the Texans' RB targets. Houston still has Dameon Pierce, who showed so much promise as a rookie in 2022 but was then horrendous in 2023, leaving it uncertain whether Mixon has serious competition for carries. The three-year, $27 million extension Houston gave Mixon after trading a seventh-round pick for him suggests the 28-year-old should be a heavily used starter even if Pierce steals some carries each week.

Gets fine rescinded
The NFL rescinded the $25,000 fine Tuesday that it had previously imposed on Mixon for publicly criticizing game officials, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The entire situation started with a case of mistaken identity, as Mixon was initially fined for comments made on social media by retired NFL receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh following the Texans' divisional-round loss to the Chiefs. The comments were erroneously attributed to Mixon in an SI.com story, and after that mistake was pointed out to the league, the NFL reissued the fine while citing Mixon's own postgame quotes, which included the remark, "You can never leave it into the ref's hands." However, Mixon ultimately appealed the fine, and the letter rescinding the fine noted that it was ultimately determined that the veteran back "did not necessarily publicly criticize the officials."
