Fernandes made 31 starts and kept eight clean sheets in the 2. Bundesliga.

Fernandes was the consistent starting option for Hamburg throughout their promotion campaign. He did well to allow just 40 goals in those 31 starts while making 74 saves. He is set to be the starter now that Hamburg are headed back into the Bundesliga, though with a total overhaul of the defense expected and the generally improved level he could struggle. He allowed 13 goals in six starts during his last run in the Bundesliga, in 2016/17.
